D-Day Airshow [DVD]
On June 6th 1994 our cameras were among the very few privileged to attend the International Ceremony at Omaha Beach attended by the head of state of 13 countries. This sets the scene for several ‘all action’ commemorations at airshows and other events.
The emotion of the D-Day tableau at Biggin Hill - which incorporated a poppy drop from an airship - contrasted with the pyrotechnics at Fighter Meet. The relative silence of 1,200 paratroops filling the sky at Ranville, Normandy on June 5th, contrasted with the roar of jets from as far apart as Canada and Czechoslovakia, departing Yeovilton for the big Flypast at Portsmouth.
RNAS Yeovilton was the operation base for aircraft from 8 nations taking part in the Southsea Flypast. Our cameras at both locations captured the extraordinary sights of Fulcrums and Phantoms, Floggers and Tomcats, Hornets, Harriers, Tornados, Mirages, Eagles, Etendards all joining forces in a unique commemoration.
Other events at Mildenhall, Old Warden and Farnborough, all paid tribute to the aviation elements of D-Day, and in drawing them all together here, we present almost the entire inventory of D-Day veteran types currently displaying at airshows.
