Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC TV system; that is principally USA, Canada and Japan?
YES.
Today, almost all DVD players in NTSC countries will play the European PAL system but we are getting reports that some Bluray players will not play either Bluray or DVD if supplied in PAL format.
We very rarely get a report of playback difficulties of DVD discs in DVD players anywhere in the world.
The Region Coding we apply to our discs is Region Zero. That means they will play in ALL DVD regions.
However we are getting reports of Bluray discs not playing in mostly Sony Bluray machines including Playstation 3 but Samsung and Panasonic have also been mentioned. It seems that Sony Bluray machines have software in them to specifically prevent viewing of 25fps discs in NTSC areas (ie USA, Canada). It does not seem to make sense that these more expensive machines have software added to restrict viewing when the cheap unbranded machines seem to play everything.
Will anyone with playback diffivculties please send me details - adrian at Planes TV dot com - particularly the exact make and model of the errant machine.
We find www.videohelp.com very useful in learning about peoples' experience with particular machines and there is often an easy fix to playback difficulties either installing new firmware or supplying a disc made in a different way.
We will update this note as we learn more.

Please revise your answer. The last report of playback difficulties was not 3 years ago, it was last week. It is deceptive to continue with the line "We very rarely get a report of playback difficulties...." Read the reports!

It seems that there is a general agreement that since a Blu-Ray is region 0 it will play wherever you are in the world.
That is false.
There is more to it than region settings. You must also consider the format: NTSC vs PAL.
NTSC is 60 fields/30 frames-per-second, at 60Hz for transmission and display of video images.
PAL (used in most of the world except the USA and Canada) is 50 field/25 frames a second, 50HZ system.
Since both the NTSC/PAL support are required in a player, the Blu Ray disc will not work in quite a few players on the North American market. This whould be the right answer to give to customers. In order to work flawlessly in Canada and USA, PlanesTV would have to convert the disc's content and video files to NTSC.
Assuming that almost all DVD or Blu Ray players will support PAL AND NTSC is not correct.
Here is some useful reading: http://hometheater.about.com/od/televisionbasics/qt/ntscpalframes.htm
PlanesTV, are you willing to convert to NTSC to have a 100% working product for North Americans? I hope so! I believe you have all you need to know, in order to make it work, in hand now.
Thank you.
PS I still haven't received anything. Will report here with a list of players I gathered once I receive the promised disc.
Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
I bought a DVD of the 2010 Battle of Britain airshow. I had been assured both online and in a phone call that the disc would play in the US. This is not the case: it will not play in either my DVD player or my New Blu Ray player (which plays all other DVDs). A second copy I bought for my friend in the UK is fine.

The copy for your friend is fine when tried in the UK? That would make sense since your friend would have a system supporting PAL or even both standards.
Can you confirm?
Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
My friend did try the disc in the UK, and it worked fine. My disc will not play on the US system.

Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
I have to disagree. I am living in Canada and this is the ONLY BD in my whole collection that I can't play. Does not work in my Panasonic player, not working in a Sony player either. It is in PAL format and absolutelly not all BD players will play them.
Sorry to say, the Tattoo 2010 BD is useless here.
Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
hello mamethot
By "BD" do you mean bluray disc? We just don't get problems with DVD's.
However we are certainly getting reports that Playstation 3 will not play PAL Blurays and it seems from your post, other players too.
There are lots of 'tweaks' we can do during production. would you be happy to report back if we sent you some experimental discs?
kind regards
Adrian

Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
Certainly. Please let me know what I have to do next. Yes BD is Blue Ray.
Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
Thank you Mamethot.
We will send you immediately a standard DVD which we are sure will play. We will also send a modified Bluray for you to try.
In the meantime it would be really helpful to know if the Bluray does play on other players. If you can, please take the disc when you next go shopping and ask the shop to try it on any Bluray players they have on demonstration.
If there are any other US/Canada customers of ours reading this and can report on PlanesTV Bluray experience we would welcome your contribution.
Many thanks - we will crack this!

Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
Sorry but I am having the same problem with the same player PS3 with up to date software.
Would it be possible to receive the same Dvd and experiments Blue ray disk
I was sooooooooooo looking forward to this.
Re: Will PlanesTV DVDs play in countries that use the NTSC ...
I just received my BlueRay copy of the Battle of Britain AIR SHOW at Duxford. I also live in Canada and own a new Sony BlueRay player. This disc will not play. You are labeling the disc as Region 0 and claiming it should play here. You are wrong my friends, it will not. There is obviously something wrong with the authoring software being used to produce your discs. The complementary DVD shipped with this item is PAL and is totally useless to me as well.
